Advantech CGS-6000 Carrier Grade Server

The SDN gateway combines both NFV and SDN: the gateway is built using virtualized COTS server architecture, in this case our Advantech CGS-6000 Carrier Grade Server equipped with two Intel® Xeon® E5-2600 v2 series processors, while the overall network is controlled through SDN. The SDN gateway combines L2-L3 OpenFlow switching with high-layer services, or L4-L7. These include load balancer, firewall and IPS/IDS network equipment. The result is a L2-L7 gateway device which is x86-based leveraging network I/O acceleration. Higher-layer services are hosted as virtual network functions (VNFs) running on the CGS-6000 virtualized server architecture.

The gateway function we’re showcasing can connect a private or public cloud to the WAN and interconnect geographically disparate enterprises over the WAN. The solution can be used for several applications such as multi-tenant data center connectivity to an MPLS WAN under SDN OpenFlow 1.3 control, Enterprise –to- enterprise connectivity over the WAN also under SDN OpenFlow 1.3 control and Accelerated (OpenVSwitch) OVS with OVSDB and OF-Config support.

The FWA-6512 is a unique high performance network application platform designed for maximum packet processing throughput by cleverly balancing the processing of network traffic from eight PCIe 3.0 based Network Mezzanine Cards (NMC) across four Intel® Xeon® processors. Equipped with the latest Intel® Xeon® E5-4600 Processor Series, formerly codenamed Ivy Bridge EP4S, the FWA-6512 platform offers the ideal performance, scalability, memory flexibility and network capacity for managing the most demanding packet processing workloads. The platform comes in a compact, leading edge 2U enclosure with a highly reliable thermal design and scalable modular architecture for the ultimate in I/O configurability. 32 PCIe 3.0 lanes per CPU socket are routed to the NMCs offering 8Gbps per lane for maximum I/O throughput. A broad portfolio of front-loading, field replaceable NMCs are available to choose from. They offer a variety of 1, 10 and 40GE port counts for up to 320 Gbps I/O connectivity and with a range of standard LAN bypass options. In addition, up to four internal PCIe x16 low profile adaptors can be installed internally for acceleration, co-processing and offload requirements. These include adaptors based on the Intel® Communications Chipset 8955 with Intel® QuickAssist Technology.

Broadcom’s OpenFlow Data Plane Abstraction (OF-DPA) software runs on Advantech’s ESP-9212 Top-of-Rack switch. OF-DPA software is currently based on OpenFlow v1.3.1 and addresses the challenges of cost-effective scalability. It provides a hardware abstraction layer (HAL) for Broadcom StrataXGS switches, and also provides an API library for OpenFlow 1.3.1 compliant agents. It is intended for both real network deployments and enablement of  research networks. The Advantech ESP-9212 switch is available with Broadcom OF-DPA as an easily deployable development package to enable network innovation.

OF-DPA OpenFlow objects are programming points for Broadcom network switch devices. These include flow tables with action sets, group table entries, logical and physical ports, meter tables, and queues. OF-DPA manages hardware resources and states on behalf of OpenFlow. In addition, OFDPA supports OpenFlow specific state such as aggregate counters and flow entry expiration. Broadcom leverages the hardware functions inside StrataXGS switches to provide the best possible performance.
