Don’t think BIG, think SMALL!

Packetarium XLc – Your micro-datacenter-in-a-box for the mobile edge

When the Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) whitepaper was first published by the ETSI industry specification group in 2012, industry analysts predicted more than just a paradigm shift in the networking industry, in fact many prognosticated a “tectonic” shift that would permanently change the network landscape. With communication service providers (CSPs) convinced that NFV and cloud network virtualization offered the means to reduce both CapEx and OpEx, bring greater flexibility to network operations and speed time to market for new network features, the course was set for 2020 and the rollout of the new IP infrastructure.

By taking example from more nimble over-the-top (OTT) web-scale cloud service providers a new virtual ecosystem has evolved around the CSPs – one that is set to transform the telecom network and accelerate the deployment of interoperable solutions based on industry standard servers and open source specifications. In 2016, as CSPs begin to seize the all-IP opportunity using general purpose processors and prepare for the delivery of new services they must optimize the infrastructure for density and cost, and leverage NFV elasticity to extend the data center to the network edge. Proximity to enterprise users and subscribers will play an increasingly important role in the next generation of apps that optimize our personal workloads through augmented reality and cognitive assistance with near real-time response. This will require a new class of system, a micro-datacenter-in-a-box providing low-latency response at the network edge.
