We Have Been Shortlisted for the IABM Design & Innovation Awards 2017!

We just learnt that the VEGA-3318 has been shortlisted for the IABM Design & Innovation Awards 2017 and we couldn’t be happier. This is going to be an exciting IBC and the great news coming from the IABM will certainly contribute to that. We are very proud to be listed among other innovative and great products and companies and we wish all good luck.

Just to give you some background, the VEGA-3318 was launched at NAB 2017 and is a high density, commercial-off-the-shelf video accelerator that offloads heavy-lifting video processing tasks in OTT video processing applications enabling cost-efficient, large-scale cloud deployments for live UHD video services. The VEGA-3318 is the world’s first video accelerator able to perform low latency, professional grade 8-ch 4Kp60 HEVC transcoding in an ultra-low power PCI Express format that can be integrated into standard servers via Linux API. Its high density enables efficient large-scale cloud deployments that can greatly contribute to the media industry’s objective of reducing CAPEX and OPEX when building next-generation live UHD OTT cloud services.

The growing demand for over-the-top delivered content is disrupting broadcast and telecom business models. Mobile and social video are driving content consumption growth with OTT viewership expected to exceed traditional viewing by 2020. Video’s nature is however different to traditional voice and internet mobile traffic. UHD video content consumes a significant amount of bandwidth and computational resources. New more efficient codecs such as HEVC add to the UHD complexity. The cost of creating multiple OTT HEVC profiles for multiscreen live UHD video streaming outstrips existing infrastructure processing capabilities. At the same time, media, telecom and internet companies are looking to optimize operations by leveraging agile cloud-based architectures that allows for rapid service provisioning. Cloud-based media processing architectures are driven by IT technologies such as virtualization and software programmability and benefit from economies of scale of commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) servers based on General Purpose Processors (GPP).

The VEGA-3318 combines the best of the broadcast and IT worlds into a high performance video accelerator that provides commercial-off-the-shelf access to specialized video processing technology. By leveraging the VEGA-3318 hardware acceleration, 32 live UHD HEVC ABR streams can be created per rack unit – the highest density available in the market. Four VEGA-3318 accelerators can be integrated into a 1U server where the control plane is flexibly managed by the GPP and the heavy-lifting video processing tasks are offloaded via an API to the acceleration card as if it was another software component. This allows for scalable cloud deployments with a capacity of up to 1,280 live UHD HEVC transcodes in a 42U rack. The CAPEX and OPEX savings are significant. VEGA-3318 accelerated solutions benefit from an up to 30x performance boost and up to a 20X reduction in power consumption and rack space.

The VEGA-3318 supports UHD, HD and SD formats and HEVC, AVC and MPEG-2 codecs including 10-bit profiles and 4:2:2 chroma subsampling. Developers can leverage Advantech’s SDK which supports Linux and Windows operating systems, FFmpeg and GStreamer. Advantech has created software drivers that are virtualization friendly.
